The Transition From Disease Prevention To Health Promotion Essay Living a healthy lifestyle is the current trend in the United States.   Eating healthy, exercising regularly, and abstaining from behaviors that can be detrimental to our health is promoted everywhere we go.   Still, the statistics for the leading causes of death in the U.S. are shocking.   Especially when we realize that there are steps we can take to lesson our risk of becoming just another statistic. According to â€Å"The National Center for Health Statistics,† the top five, leading causes of death in the United States are:   1. Heart Disease kills 651,696 each year.   2.   Malignant Neoplasms or Cancer kills 559,228 each year.   3.   Cerebrovascular Disease or strokes kills 143,449 each year.   4.   Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma kills 130,896 each year.   5.   Unintentional injury kills 116,669 each year. (WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Report, 2008) Gender, family history and race are contributing factors that will help determine whether or not we acquire any of these diseases.   A lifetime of unhealthy living is also a contributor. In comparison to the five leading causes of death in the United States, the five leading causes of death in New York State are 1.   Heart Disease kills 51,963 each year.   2. Malignant Neoplasms kills 35,552 each year.   3.   Chronic Low Respiratory Disease kills 6,818 each year.   4.   Cerebrovascular or strokes kill 6,617 each year.   5.   Influenza and Pneumonia kills 5,509 each year.   (WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Report, 2008) Some of the preventive measures that we can take against disease are: abstain from the use of tobacco products, eat a healthy well balanced diet (eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, limited amounts of cholesterol, red meats, sugars and saturated fats), regular exercise (thirty minutes at least three times a week), maintain a healthy weight, limited alcohol consumption, regular cancer screenings, vaccines if applicable and drug therapy if necessary. There are also some less conventional methods of disease prevention.   Many people take vitamin supplements regularly to insure that they are getting enough of the vitamins that they need.   Meditation and other spiritual activities are practiced in order to control the stress in ones life.   Education is also an important prevention measure and it’s never too young to start.  Ã‚   Healthy children are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle in adulthood.   Prevention is not a guarantee against diseases, but it can certainly make a difference in our quality of life as well as the length of our life. Industrial Revolution (Extra Credit) The era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period in which fundamental changes occurred in agriculture, textile, metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social structure in England. This period is appropriately labeled â€Å"revolution,† for it thoroughly changed the old manner of doing things and bringing up new techniques. Constantly improving the ways in which things were made, which had effects of cutting costs and improving quality and efficiency was revolutionary about the era. The changes that occurred during this period occurred gradually. Industrial Revolution did not happen suddenly; it happened spread out the centuries. It wasn’t only inventions but mostly improvement and new techniques to present inventions. Advances in agricultural techniques and practices resulted in an increased supply of food and raw materials, changes in industrial organization and new technology resulted in increased production, efficiency and profits, and th e increase in commerce, foreign and domestic, were all conditions which promoted the advent of the Industrial Revolution. The improved yield of the agricultural sector can be attributed to the enclosure movement and to improved techniques and practices developed during this period. A common practice in early agriculture was to allow the land to lie fallow after it had been exhausted through cultivation. Later it was discovered that the cultivation of clover and other legumes would help to restore the fertility of the soil. Prior to 1760 the manufacture of textiles occurred in the homes, by people who gave part of their time to it. It was a tedious process from raw material to finished product. Many of the stages of production were performed by women and children. The supply of raw material for the woolen industry was obtained domestically. In the cases of silk and cotton, the raw materials were obtained from foreign sources, such as, China, the West Indies, North American and Africa . John Kay’s flying-shuttle, which enabled one weaver to do the work of two, and Richard Arkwright’s roller spinner, which was to make spinning more efficient and James Hargreaves’ jenny, a device which enabled the operator to simultaneously spin dozens of threads, was readily adopted. Arkwright and others developed the water frame. Coal was the one of the most important material during Industrial Revolution. It was the black gold of the eighteenth century. Underground mining was extremely dangerous and risky. Improvements in coal mining came in the form of improved tunnel ventilation, improved underground and surface transportation, and the use of gunpowder to blast away at the coal seams, and improved tunnel illumination through the use of lamps.

Its goal was meant to reduce suffering by allowing the public control of industry and social services. Another important quality of the ethical leaders is humanity. They should be humane and kind. Team building is the primary focus of ethical leadership. All implemented decisions by an ethical leader are driven by value. An ethical leader encourages and rewards his employees on coming up with innovative ideas. The leader expects the employees to follow the example that he sets for them. An ethical leader ensures a regular understanding over the company. An ethical leader does not overlook any violations on the organizational ethics (Stem-researchethics.org, 2017). Ethical leadership ensures that the job satisfaction of the workforce members faces an increment due to the focus on cooperation and association. This ensures that the employees promptly report to the authorities concerned on experiencing problems. It also provides collaborative benefits on an additional basis. This leadership style ensures low business liability thereby preventing expensive internal errors within the organization. Ethical leadership has some disadvantages as well. The organizational vision should fall in line with the ethical framework of the ethical leader (Northouse 2015). Ethical leadership depends on the leaders ability to influence. At times for the leader may find upholding lofty ethical standards extremely difficult. Organizations practicing ethical leadership have to spend attention towards their policies. The consistency requirements also prove to be a drawback at times. Ethics can be broadly divided into two principle theories, the deontological ethics and the teleological ethics. An example of a deontic relationship is the relationship between an employee and his employer. The set of rules that focuses on the duties and concentrates on the activities of people more than on the effects are referred to as deontological ethics. According to this set of principles, vices and virtues are discernible from the action. Kantian ethics may be cited as an example for deontological ethics. According to Kant, acts from the duty sense are morally correct. Kant further opines that judgement of whether an action is right or wrong depends on the motives of the doer and not on the consequences of the action. Deontology helps a person to stay consistent to their works as they work in a same manner each time they do satisfy their commitments. People practicing deontology are often seen to become supererogatory in their actions. This principle of ethics does have disad vantages as well. The followers have chances of not violating his duties to avoid several other violations by others. They operate, at times, without any logical reason. Moreover, the system does not provide with ways for dealing with situations of conflicting duties. Unlike deontological ethics, the outcomes of the action justify the means of action in case of teleological ethics. The consequences affect the righteousness of the act. A number of philosophers like Bentham, Mills and Machiavelli promote this principle of ethics. Teleological ethics are based on the increment of happiness and decrement of the antonym. Practitioners of teleology base the principle on the consequences of the actions of the doer. This principle is easily understandable and is based on common sense. Despite all the advantages, teleological principle of ethics has disadvantages as well. The followers of this principle find difficulty in predicting consequences of the action. There are found discrepancies in the followers as to the assessment procedures in the calculation of good consequences. The results of an act may vary according to the person responsible for the act. The ethical principles that are based on results lay more importance on the outcomes of an action rat her than the process. Teleological ethics is not consistent with the human rights.
